PRAISED BY SENATOR

(Received February 9, 10.20 a.m.)

SYDNEY, This Day.

Senator Mcßride paid a tribute to New Zealand's war effort.

RECREATION OFFICERS' CONFERENCE

A conference of Government area recreation officers is being held in Wellington, the officers coming from as far afield as Southland and the Waikato. These officers, who were the first appointed under the Government's scheme, have been in their areas for five months, and will take the opportunity of pooling information and experience, not only for their own benefit, but also for that of the further six area officers whom the physical welfare and recreation branch will place at an early date.

Comparison of experience shows that the interest of the general public, despite the war, has Vbeert, jnaniffisted in a splendid form. ■■■* Recreation camps have been organised, boys' clubs formed, tramping parties and girls' cycle-touring outings conducted, keepfit classes engaged on 100-hour courses, learn-to-swim instruction performed, sports-coaching schemes instituted, and a host of other recreative and physical activities commenced. The need for maintaining national morale and of keeping the nation fit. for anything that may come is considered even more acute in times of war than in peace.
