WELLINGTON STAKfeS

SIR BEAU MUCH TOO GOOD

The Wellington Stakes, the only classic event at this meeting of the club, served-to confirm the impression that Sir Beau made in. the two first races of his career at Manawatu at Christmas. He ran much more greenly on the wider course than he did at Awapuni, but when he did go truly straight, which was not till the last two furlongs, he completely ,eclipsed his; opposition. Sir Beau was difficult to take into line at. the: start and he began in the lend well out from the others. For the first'couple of furlongs he was at the rear and running about, and he shifted his course again when starting his challenge, but H. N. Wiggins soon had him on a true tack and the issue was settled a long way from the post. He was easing up in winning by four lengths. . i

Sir Beau has now won twice and been narrowly beaten, once: in three starts to date, and even from'yesterday's small field there was sufficient line to indicate that he is one of the. best juveniles yet seen out this season. He is a Beau r Pere colt after the Taurangi stamp, and he is very well bred maternally, his' dam, the Chief Ruler^Rosie Desmond mare Rose Day, being half-sister to Kiosk and Mireusonta. He. is being raced by his breeder, Mr, I. Lupton, of Waverley. Kentucky followed Doria and Absolve to the false rail and then outstayed them for the other dividend, continuing his consistent record of minor placings. Doria was in trouble two furlongs from home, and she just struggled on over the last furlong. Absolve actually headed Doria near the crossing to the course, but he faded from the false rail. Lambourn ran fairly, finishing just behind Absolve. On the watered track, the time, 59£ sec, though well outside the race record, was quite good, and Sir Beau could have .done better. The field was one of the smallest that have ever contested the race.
