UNHOPPLED HORSES

Events for straight-out trotters arc always welcome on programmes, and many patrons of the sport prefer to see the unhoppled horses in action. For some unaccountable reason, this department has not developed gen 2rally to the same extent as the pacing section, and even in the South. Island; where opportunities are not so limited, there appears to be. a, dearth of butstanding trottersl . ; '

This unfortunate position obtaining in the North Island has often beeti attributed to the severe penalties incurred in this section, and whether this is correct or not it is a noticeable point that most of the leading trotting performers are forced to go to the South Island to pay their way. North Island clubs. are faced with a difficult problem to arrange suitable classes, and the majority have no option but to cater for the novice and improving trotters ,6nly. A regrettable feature of recent races has been the failure of so many competitors to trot solidly, which, after all, makes the attraction'of trotting events so interesting, but it is possible that this is due in some measure to the recent sudden hardening of tracks.
