Special forecast for Wellington:—
Variable winds and fine weather. Milder temperatures during the day, but a cold night.
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at ndon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for light to moderate southerly to, south-easterly winds over the North Island, with northerlies setting in later in the South Island. The weather for the most part will be fair to fine, but some scattered showers are still probable between Cook Strait and East Cape and in the far north and south. Day temperatures will be milder, but the night will be cold with further frosts. *. .• . („. r r The meteorological situation has remained practically unaltered during the last twenty-four hours. Pressure over the New Zealand area is still high, while over eastern Australia it is low. Light and rather variable winds prevailed yesterday " morning, but moderate to strong southerlies be^ came general again during the afternoon. In the far north and south conditions were somewhat changeable and showery, but the rainfalls were mainly light. Elsewhere the weather, was mainly fair to fine, but during the evening there were a few scattered showers in the eastern districts of both islands. There were further frosts in many places last night, but conditions were not as severe as they have been recently. Light to moderate southerly winds are still blowing over the North Island, with but little wind south of Cook Strait. Although some scattered showers are still falling in the eastern districts of the North Island, today's weather is fair and'sunny generally.
Auckland's weather yesterday was cloudy to overcast, with an occasional light drizzle which gave two points of rain. A light south-westerly wind was blowing during the day, but dropped towards evening. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 55.4 and 45.2 degrees respectively. The weather early this morning was clear, but by 9 a.m. it had clouded over again. In Wellington it was bright and sunny in the morning, but more cloudy in the afternoon, the day's bright sunshine totalling 8.7 hours. The morning's light northerly breeze , changed about noon to a southerly, which later freshened. A few very light showers, fell during the evening. The maximum temperature reached during the day was 52.2 degrees, the minimum last night falling to 41 degrees. This morning's weather was fine and clear, with a fresh southerly breeze. Christchurch had a mild and sunny day with a light wind from the southwest. This freshened and the sky later in the day clouded over, and in the afternoon there was a little iight rain. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 49.7 and 34 degrees, with 4.3 degrees of frost last night. The weather this morning was fine again with a light westerly breeze. A strong south-westerly wind prevailed in Dunedin all yesterday, the weather being overcast and showery, with a rainfall totalling five points. This morning, however, was bright and sunny with practically no wind. - WEEKEND PROSPECTS. Wellington can expect fair weather over the weekend. By Sunday the wind will probably be in the north again, giving somewhat milder tern peratures, this change in wind direction heralding less settled weather at the beginning of next week.
