MANAWATU WIN

MATCH WITH INTER-HOUSE

There was little doubt of the superiority of tho Manawatu representative Association football team over the representatives of the Wellington luter-house grade on the second ground at the Basin Reserve, although the local players often reached a high standard of skill. Manawatu. however, were too consistent, and they brought a method of attack to which the Welllngtonians were not accustomed: they did not wait, as most orthodox teams do, until the ball was into Wellington's last line of defence before shooting, but shot from all ranges and angles, and with speed and accuracy. But for the excellent display of G. Cuthbert, goalkeeper for Inter-house, the winning score of 3-2 would have been much greater.

There was a tendency on both sides in the early part of the game to take the ball flatfooted, but that drawback was soon recifled when Manawatu opened up with long, raking passing rushes. They threw the ball around, feeding the right wing particularly, and the positional play generally was sound. Manawatu scored in the first main attack, Allen (centre-forward) snapping in one from a melee. Wellington pressed in return, but in a rugged onslaught by Manawatu Glaister, the insideleft, rammed in a close-range one.

Wellington's turn came later in the half, Bradford heading in a fine corner-kick from Mcliwee on the right.

Wellington drew level just after the kickoff in the second half, R. Liddicoat, centreforward, landing a good goal. Bnt for a Wellington half holding on to the ball too long under pressure, the game might have finished in a. draw. Allan, however, beat Cullen for the ball, and the game ended: Manawatu 3, Wellington Inter-house 2. The referee was Sir. A. Smith.
