N.Z. TOURISM

CENTENNIAL PREPARATIONS

The difficulties facing the Tourist and Publicity Department in coping with the increased number of visitors expected in the Dominion during the Centennial celebrations were referred to by the Acting Minister, in Charge of the Department, the Hon. W. E. Parry, in an address to the annual conference of departmental district officers and hotel managers, which is being held in the Department's film studios, Miramar, Wellington. The Minister, who was introduced to the conference by the general manager of the Tourist and Publicity Department, Mr. L. J. Schmitt, expressed his confidence that all problems would be overcome. He also laid emphahis on the part that the Department would play in developing the group travel scheme which he envisaged as being embodied in the National Fitness plan. By means of that scheme, the Minister said, New Zealanders would be enabled to see their own country at reasonable cost and thus- a national pride and spirit would be engendered.
