> RAIL TRAFFIC HELD UP

(Received June 7, 2 p.m.)

WARSAW, June 6. A fire at the central station suspended'traffic except for a few suburban services. One fireman was killed and four injured, and many passengers hurt as the result of a wall falling. built to provide for traffic speeds from 45 to 50 miles per hour. The city watermains would be buried much more deeply than formerly, and consequently repairs of burst pipes would be more difficult. The surfacing of the road would be sealing, and not a thick bitumen surface as in the past. Mr. E. Palliser said he considered they could rely on the engineers of the Main Highways Board to see that the job was done properly. SPEEDS ON ROAD. Mr. J. W. Andrews said the road was to leave their control and they would not have any say.in the speeds on it. The City Engineer had said that the super-elevation would provide for speeds of 45 to 50 miles per hour, but that appeared to him to be excessive. He had been told by those who should know that a blow-out on the elevation could easily lead to a vehicle toppling over to the Hutt Road. He considered up to 40 miles per hour was fast enough for traffic on the road Mr. Hislop said the Main Highways Board should have advised them of the altered plans. Mr. G. London said that he agreed with Mr. Hislop on that point. Mr. Luke said they had received the original plans, but he had had to visit the job to find out what the altered plans involved. The City Engineer was the responsible officer for the road, Mr. Hislop said, and should have been advised of what was being done.

It was agreed that nothing could be done about the matter by the board, but that any plans available should be provided by the Main Highways Board.
