WELLINGTON TOO GOOD
Wellington were too good for Poneke when these teams met at Hataitai Park, but the game was always interesting. Play was fairly even in the first spell, although Wellington lhad the advantage, but in the second Poneke were definitely outplayed. The Wellington forwards took charge /in the early stages of the game, and although Poneke were in good positions several times they could not finish their movements. The Wellington backs went .well and handled better than their opponents. In the second spell the Poneke iorwards, who played quite solidly in the first half, lost their dash and Wellington scored 16 points. Again Poneke showed up at stages but could not cross. Their backs were not fast enough and did not handle the ball cleanly, while the defence was generally good. Towards the end of the match the Wellington men were running through the Poneke team. For Wellington, tries were scored by Thompson (2), Ford (2), and Cragg. Lang converted twice and put a penalty kick over. Wright kicked a penalty for Poneke. Early in the second half M. Marsden (Wellington) left the field injured and Shand went on. . •
The referee was Mr. T. G. KirkBurnnand.
