PIRATES V. MARIST
Teams drawn to play curtain-raisers have the habit of producing ' uninspiring football, and Pirates and Marist, who provided the e.arly game at' Athletic Park, did not distinguish themselves by proving exceptions to the general rule. Pirates won by 14 points to 12. It was close, but Pirates are potentially a rather better side than the score indicates. Yet Marist might easily have won, if only because of greater activity. Their forwards worried the more sluggish Pirates' pack, but the backs were very indifferent. Both sides will improve. Tries were scored for Pirates by Rou?cel and Dennison. Bowden converted one try and kicked two penalty goalSi Cruickshank scored for Marist, and Barnao kicked three penalty goals. l
