FROM HUNTING RANKS

Master Balboa was having -his first race in public when he won the Hunters' Flat Handicap at the Birchwood Hunt Meeting last Saturday. However, he has had plenty of experience with the hounds and he is expected to make good over country during the winter months. His next start will be as a jumper in the O'Brien Memorial Steeplechase at Otautau on, Saturday. Master Balboa is an aged gelding by Balboa from a mare registered as of unknown pedigree, but his dam is believed to have been a mare by Bellman. Under the name of Bounce hei showed himself a jumper of much pro-| mise as a follower of the Birchwood hounds and he also was able to turn on more speed than the average hunter on the flat. He is owned by Mr. W., K. Porteous, of Winton, and is a member of the team of the Heddon Bush trainer P. J. Boyle, whose stable also shelters the jumpers Black Banner (who was second to Master Balboa on Saturday), Shillelagh Wood Qumopal, Red Owl, and Matchem, as well as the flat performers Merry Simon, Triple Cone, and Moonraider.
