LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS

MEETING OF COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Those present were Mr. J. W. Andrews (Mayor)', and Councillors C. J. Ashton, Wm. C. Gregory, H. V. Horlor, J. E. F. Vogel, W. A. F. Hail, A. Marshall, W. T. J. Morrison, J. Mitchell, and E. P. Hay. The resignation of the assistant librarian, Miss C. Webb," was received with regret. A formal resolution was passed authorising the,borrowing of £4175 for the purpose of providing houses for some officers of the- council. A resolution was passed expressing the appreciation of the council for the hospitality displayed to the council's delegates to the municipal conference. Councillor Horlor was appointed a member of the Petone-Lower Hutt joint committee in place of Councillor Ashton during the latter's absence. The council congratulated its Town Clerk (Mr. B. S. Knox) on his election, for the third time in succession, as president of the Town Clerks' Association. . ■ •' On the motion of Councillor Morrison it was decided to ask the P. and T. Department to make available in the borough facilities to enable nonsubscribers to make long-distance telephone calls after hours. On the recommendation of the bylaws committee the question of appointing additional traffic officers was referred to the joint Petone-Lower Hutt committee. The council decided to advise the Commissioner of Transport that it preferred to leave the question of restrictions governing motor-cycles to the Road Safety Council. Mr. S. H. Wood was appointed pumpI ing station engineer. The Hutt Valley Horticultural Society expressed its thanks to Mr. E. Hutt and his staff for the . excellent display\ of flowers at the recent show. The reserves committee arranged for an inspection' of the new scenic reserve which Mr. H. M. Hay ward has handed over to the State. On the reconimendatioh of the

works committee the council was authorised to take from Mr. V. Dyke, under -the Public Works Act, suffi> cient land for a borough yard in anticipation of the closing of the present one when the new post office is commenced; . . .
