LATE MR. CAMPBELL
A GREAT HORTICULTURIST
At a recent meeting in Wellington of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, the president (Mr. tF. S. Pope) and other members referred to the death of Mr. J. A. Campbell, and the president moved a motion of condolence in the following form: "That the Dominion executive council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, representing as it does in a greater or lesser degree every kind of horticultural interest throughout the Dominion, places on record its deep sense of the momentous loss sustained by our national horticulture through the passing of John Angus Campbell, U.D.H. (N.Z.), Director of the Horticulture Division of the Department of Agriculture. Through a long connection with that division as orchard instructor and assistant director, and for many years as director, he came into personal touch with every phase of the industry, and has left, in all directions, the impress of his knowledge, technical ability, executive powers, and outstanding personal charm. "He was one of the founders and principal workers in the Institute of Horticulture, of whose executive council he had been a valuable member since its inception, and his passing will leave a gap in its ranks which will be impossible to fill. This council trusts that all engaged in the industry—be they scientists, Government officers, nurserymen, amateurs, orchardists, market gardeners, or any others engaged, in any way in horticulture—will devote themselves anew to their work as the best means of commemorating the friend whose life was devoted to the promotion of the well-being of horticulture. "The council further resolves that the question of the best form of tangible memorial to Mr. Campbell's life and work be brought up at the annual conference of the institute at New Plymouth in January next. To Mrs. Campbell and her family the institute tenders its most sincere sympathy in the irreparable loss they have sustained."
