5000 HOUSES A YEAR

"It is the intention of the Government to build 5000 houses every year," declared Mr. R. McKeen, Labour candidate for Wellington South, when speaking at Newtown last evening. The State, he said, had brought about a vast improvement in the housing situation where private enterprise under the old Government had failed. Complaints had been made about the allegedly high rents charged for the State houses, but on account of the acute shortage of accommodation, in; Wellington in particular, as much was being paid for single rooms as was being charged in rent for the new Government homes. Furthermore, if the figures were analysed it would probably be found that those who were buying their own homes —as advocated by the National Party—were paying more in interest charges on their mortgages than the sum charged by the State for the rent of the houses. "We could build cheap houses —cheap and nasty," Mr. McKeen added, "but we are not going to do it. We have set a standard of quality, and we mean to maintain it." ..
