STRONG CUP FIELD

OHINEMURI'S OPENING DAY

[(Special from "Early Bird.') AUCKLAND, This Day. The northern country circuit will commence with the Ohinemuri Jockey Club's Spring Meeting at Paeroa tomorrow and on Monday, and the fields are of sufficient size and quality to ensure that the fixture will be most successful. The going will be firm unless heavy rain falls during the next twenty-four hours. The betting will be under the win-and-place system. The principal race is the Poland Cup, for which nine are listed, and, with all except two of tnem entered for the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie next week, the form is likely to attract attention. Round Up may be one of the hardest to beat, for he should be sufficiently well conditioned to coyer the eleven furlongs. The course is not a severe test of stamina, and he has previously performed well at Paeroa. King Rey appears to have a fine chance in the weaker opposition, and Kena's second and first at Avondale were impressive. Gold Vaals, as a result of his phenomenal finishes into fourth and second place in the Avondale Cup and Plumpton Handicaps respectively a fortnight ago, will possibly be the actual favourite, for there is no doubt that his latest form has been most ent couraging. The best of the others may - be Cheval de Volee and Shy. A TRICKY ISSUE. ■ The Flying Handicap embraces a • number. of horses appearing for the first time this season, and the form - may be tricky Llangollen, Gay Seton, Prince Acre, Royal Dance, Sergia, Alyth, and Little Artist are well favoured, and Noitaro, a speedy two-year-old last term, is an interesting runner. Jan Ridd made a promising debut in his one race over obstacles five months ago, and he is a very fit horse, expected to make a bold showing against High Star in the hurdles. There is not a good field left in the Maramarua Steeplechase, and Bells of Bow and the veteran Biform seem nicely placed. Arrangements have been made to run the Kerepeehi Hack in two divisions; but tha number of acceptors is only two above the safety limit, and as several claim later engagements it looks as if it will not require dividing. Maxam and Corato are very fast. Spear, ford has only to be kept reasonably handy to be dangerous in the maiden event the Trial Handicap, and in the Hack Cup Paddy the Rip will endeavour to complete the hat-trick, FORM AND CARD. The following horses promise to be supported:— Kerepeehi Hack.—Maxam, Corato, Poland. Handicap Hurdles.—Jan Ridd, High Star, Simint. Trial Handicap.—Spearford, Manawahe, Hessketoon.
