LARGE ATTENDANCE

MUSIC SOCIETY'S EVENING

It seems that Wellington's music lovers are being given a more than ordinary stimulus by visiting celebrities. Last night a very large number assembled in James Smith's tearooms to hear a lecture-recital by Mr. Felix Swinstead, R.A.M., the well-known pianist-composer, who was present at the invitation of the Wellington branch of the British Music Society. The large room was lit by large standard lamps with attractive parchment shades in tonings of pink, green, yellow, and neutral. They cast soft pools of light on the bowls of scarlet rhododendrons and virgin-white bulbs which were set on low tables about the room, and emphasised the delicate pink of the fragile japonica which spread starred branches against the neutralcoloured background of the niched walls. Assisting the executive to receive the guests were Miss Valeric Corliss, honorary organiser, and Miss Molly Atkinson, secretary. After a-most enjoyable programme of music had been concluded, the several hundred guests foregathered at the round tea tables, which were set for supper, and enjoyed a period of discussion about subjects of common interest. Those present included Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schramm, Mr. Carl Atkinson, Mrs. Stanhope Dawson, Mrs. J. D. Gray, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. C. Oswin and Miss Therle Oswin, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. G.
