TWO CHARGES
WHARF LABOURER REMANDED
Charged with the theft on August 25 of three ladies' shoes, the property of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, and with assaulting Detective-Sergeant W. Tricklebank, Mark Gerald Carter, a wharf labourer, aged 48, appeared before Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. Mr. R. Hardie Boys, who appeared for the accused, said that his client had been arrested yesterday, and that he had been instructed only this morning. There might be a counter-charge of assault. The accused had informed him that he had a good defence. Mr. Boys asked for a demand until Thursday. Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle said that the police alleged that after the accused had been engaged in discharging English cargo from the Mamayi last night the shoes had been found in his possession. When the sergeant was searching him it was alleged that he assaulted the sergeant. A remand until Thursday was granted. Bail was fixed in the accused's own recognisance at £25, with one surety of that amount..
