TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

Dark Water is the name that has been v claimed for the yearling fullbrother to Roaming in W. J. Wood's team at Trentham.

Roaming is still out in the paddock, but he is to resume work at Trentham after next week's meeting. . Tail . Light's reappearance as a hurdler tomorrow will be watched with interest, as this son of Day Comet is expected to make good at the game. Tidewaiter and Gold Glare, who, are engaged in the hack sprint at Matton tomorrow, are to be sold at the Trentham. sale next Friday.. Miss Waitarere, who ran a promising fourth- at Otaki first up recently and is engaged at Marton tomorrow, is a two-year-old filly by the defunct Danilof, and she will be one of the last offspring of her sire to race. If Quexona fails to make a showing at Marton tomorrow or at Trentham next week she may not be persevered with further. She is well, but is very much on the small side;

Informer, who was formerly trained at Trentham, has been given away to •Mr. G.-..R. Grace, owner of Clarion Call, and he will make his first appearance from L. G. Morris's? stable in the maiden event at Marton tomorrow.

Golden Ridge, who gave much promise a couple of years back, was taken over about two months ago by the Awapuni trainer B. W. Watson, and he will be making his first appearance from the stable at.Marton tomorrow.

Gordon Richards had the option of riding Bois Roussel. in the English Derby. He preferred Pasch, and had the mortification of seeing the other win. • • ■■ • .

Uncle Jim was nominated for the Grand National, Beaufort, and Lincoln Steeplechases at the Grand National Meeting, but. was. not included in the list. ' -'.■..■ • ' >

Bois Roussel, winner of the 1938 English Derby, was called after a famous horse who won the Prix dv JockeyClub in 1864. It is interesting to note that his dam, Plucky Liege, who was English-bred, was twenty-three years old when she produced Bois Roussel. A follower of the Birchwood Hounds at Benmore last week was Lochcorrib, a four-year-old sister, (to Shillelagh Wood, who finished second in last year's Grand National Steeplechase, and half-sister to Ballybrit, one of the best young steeplechasers produced this season. Lochcorrib is a good type of mare, and she, like Shillelagh Wood and Ballybrit, will carry the colours of her breeder, Mr. M. Hanley. One of the best-looking yearlings round about Riccarton is Grey Night, a half-brother by Nightly to Grey Honour. He is a nicely-coupled bay with black points and a small blaze. He is to make his first appearance on the track in the near future. Other rising two-year-olds in D. E. .Cotton's stable are Shepherd, a chestnut colt by Pink Coat from Miss Muffit. and a bay colt by Pink. Coat from Seaside, _by : 4ates»-" - -~^— -
