PROTEST IN TORONTO

A protest has been filed by the German Consul, Herr Kroop, with the Mayor, Mr. Ralph Day, against an alleged insult to Germany by Alderman William Croft in the remark that the civic Zoo was so dirty that it wa« only fit for Herr Hitler. Alderman Croft refused to retract, declaring, "Tell the Consul to go to Hades. Hitler cannot goose-step Canada." i ; Herr Kroop stated that the protest had been ordered by the ConsulGeneral at Ottawa, on instructions from Berlin. , ' The Mayor told the Consul that Alderman Croft was not speaking toe the municipal council but independently. Mr. J. J. Glass, a member of tb« ' Ontario Legislature, stated that no , ' swell-headed attempt by Herr Hitler could stifle Canadian public opinion. s If Herr Hitler ditj fewer disgraceful things himself he would not be i»> ■' suited.

The Berlin correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" states thit the German Legation at Prague has strongly protested against the singing .of a sons in Czech schools, which insults Herr Hitler and which is also used ai • soldiers'marching song.

The Legation has demanded the immediate ending of an intolerable situation and the punishment of thoae responsible.
