FAREWELL FUNCTION

A farewell function tendered to Miss York, late of the Island Bay School, was the occasion of ia most enjoyable gathering of the staff, committee, parerits, and present and old associates of the scnool. v ). ''■'.-'.'."./'.

The speakers o£, the evening were , Mr..'Kobt','McKeeri f ;:MJi.,.'.;-Mr. O. J. Howarth,, the headmaster,; and Mr. E. J. Smith,: chairman of the school committee and of the Home and School Association. They paid tribute to Miss York's sterling qualities and splendid service over her 7J years ; bn the staff of the school. .Following : the chairman's eulogy and expressions of regret at the loss the school had suffered by Miss York's transfer on Miss York was presented; with a travelling.dressing table set. Miss York suitably replied.' Vocal items, under the able accompaniment of Mrs. Howard Cook, were rendered by Mrs. ■-Ewen, Mesdames Ewen arid Duncan v (duet), and Mr. Ken' Macauley, and ;Miss Montgomery gave elocutionary items. A half-hour play reading was given by Mr. Howarth and Misses Brown and Evans, of the school staff. The items, which were greatly appreciated, were responded tc* by well merited encores. Supper was provided.

Members and friends of the Women's Social Progress Movement are reminded of the.social afternoon to be held in the English-speaking' Union rooms, Nathan's Buildings, Grey Street, on Monday next at 2.30 p.m. A discussion will be held, led by Mrs. M. H. Chatfield, M.8.E., on the economic status of married women. This should prove most interesting, as the subject is one to which much thought is being given at the present: time. In view of the instability of much of the home life of today, the W.S.P.M. has had this subject under consideration in the hope that thereby some contribution ; of value might be made towards a more stable social home relationship. All intefested'women are invited to attend.
