PETONE CROSSING
A TRAP FOR DRIVERS
Last night a car struck a white post at the Petone railway crossing and was considerably damaged. Accidents to cars at this crossing are frequent. Motorists who are not familiar with the locality often fail to take the wide sweep, over the rails and get stuck in the cattle-stop. At least five minor accidents'of this nature have happened at the crossing in the last two months.
Although the Petone crossing is one of the most dangerous in New Zealand, not much has been said about it of late by local bodies and traffic authorities. A survey has been made for extending the Western Hutt Road through to McKenzie Street, Petone, so that the level crossings at Petone and Normandale will be avoided. If this work is authorised by. the Government the danger of the Petone crossing will be largely eliminated, except for purely local traffic.
Motorists have expressed the opinion that the crossing should be better lighted or at least that the wide sweep of the crossing should be indicated by an illuminated sign.
