COST TO AUSTRALIA

Australia spends more than £11,000,000 a year on education. Her health bill is more than £8,000,000 a y^ar, and to preserve law and order she spends more than £4,000,000 a year. Between them these obligations cost nearly £24,000,000 a year.

The cost to each citizen each year is £3 10s. Education costs Australia £1 12s lid a year each, health £1 ss, and preservation of law and order 12s Id. •

An analysis of State contributions to social services, submitted to the Grants Commission, shows that New South Wales spends £4,324,000 on education, Victoria £2,923,000, Queensland £1,795,000, South Australia £97,000, Western Australia £799,000, and Tasmania £345,000.

The expenditure on health is:—New South Wales £4,613,000, Victoria £1,359,000, Queensland £1,143,000, South Australia £531,000, Western Australia £593,000, and Tasmania £249,000.

Preservation of law and order costs New South Wales £1,804,000, Victoria £998.000, Queensland £640,000, South Australia' £272,000, Western Australia £256,000, and Tasmania £166,000.

The cost per head for each service in each State is:—

Education: New South Wales 32s 3d, Victoria 31s 7d, Queensland 36s 6d, South Australia 335, Western Australia 35s sd, Tasmania 27s Bd.

Health: New South Wales 34s sd, Victoria 14s Bd, Queensland 23s 2d, South Australia 18s, Western Australia 26s 3d, Tasmania 21s 6d.

Law and order: New South Wales 13s 6d, Victoria 10s 9d, Queensland 13s, South Australia 9s 3d, Western Australia 11s 4d, Tasmania 14s 4d.

New Sauth Wales contributes £69,000 towards university education. This works out at 4d less than the Australian per capita average, and Is 4d less than the payment made by Western Australia, which makes the highest payment for this service.

The payments per head towards technical education are:—New South Wales Is 3d, Victoria Is Bd, Queensland Is 10d, South Australia 3s 7d, Western Australia 2s 3d, Tasmania 2s Id.
