FINE WEATHER

CHANGE FOR THE BETTER

Special forecast for Wellington:—

Moderate to strong north-westerly to westerly winds. Weather fair to fine.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing 24 hours, is for north-westerly to westerly winds in Cook Strait and parts of the East Coast. Elsewhere south-westerlies will prevail, but will veer later to westerlies in the far south. The wind is expected to be strong in some exposed positions, but will decrease; otherwise, winds will be light to moderate. The weather is expected to be fine in eastern districts, and changeable to the west of the ranges, with scattered passing showers, but improving except in the far south. Temperatures will be cool, with some frosts inland in the South Island. It will be milder tomorrow.

The small depression located in western Nelson yesterday deepened considerably, and the pressure gradients about the centre became very steep. There were consequently northerly gales in Taranaki, Wellington, and parts of Nelson. Elsewhere moderate to' strong west to south-west winds prevailed, and as the depression passed eastward last night these became general. There was heavy rain in the areas round the centre of the depression during its passage, and except in the Auckland-province, where it was only scattered, rain has been general. Temperatures were mild yesterday, but fell during the night. Barometers had risen considerably by this morning, and though there were still scattered showers in the west and far south, the weather had improved. The prospects are for a more normal type of weather from now on.

Auckland has had cool and showery weather, with a cool west to southwest breeze.

There was a slight improvement in Wellington's weather for a few hours yesterday morning, but heavy rain fell in the afternoon and evening. A strong northerly .wind was blowing, and in the late afternoon this increased to gale force, gusts up to 56 miles an hour being recorded. After 6 p.m., however, it began to fall away, and at 7 p.m. changed to a south-westerly. This morning the weather was clear and cool with. north-westerly breeze. Rainfall was 0.92 inches, and there was sunshine for 0.4 hours. The maximum temperature was 61.2 degrees, and the minimum 49.2 degrees. Christchurch had overcast weather with low cloud and steady rain yesterday afternoon, and showers during the night. An improvement took place this morning. There was a moderate to strong south-west breeze yesterday, but this morning it was calm.

At Dunedin yesterday it was overcast, with a strong south-westerly breeze and steady rain. This morning it was improving. Temperatures were mild yesterday, but cool this morning.
