KILBIRNIE'S SECOND LOSS

Had it not been lor the efforts of Moody playing his first game in senior cricket, it is doubtful whether Kilbirnie would have managed to score 40 runs in their first innings' reply to Hutt's score of 137 at the Hutt Recreation Ground on Saturday. Kilbirnie eventually reached 99, however, and, losing on the first innings by 38 runs, suffered their second loss this season. ..'■]■

Some excuse for their display may be gained from the fact that of their regular team,. D. S. Wilson, Christophersen, Rice, Bain, Parsl'e, and Ward were not playing, but even so, to have seven wickets down for 28 as they had at one stage in the game, was an exceedingly poor performance. Hutt resumed their rather unconvincing innings with seven wickets down for 94 and- a bit of gentle wagging on the part of the tail saw the side all out for 137. Wilson and Handscomb, two promoted second grade players, had most success with the ball, but a pleasing feature of the bowling was the return of J. Ashenden, who has. been but of the game for some time owing' to a leg injuryHe took one wicket for 11 runs off four overs.

Kilbirnie opened with Coltman and Wrigley, but the former went lbw with 8 on the board. A. Ashenden, J. Ashenden, Blamires, Wrigley, Turnbull, and^Lubransky .all—departed cheaply, arid' when Handscombe joined Moody at the wickets, 28 runs were on for the'loss of seven wickets. Moody, from the start, was as solid as a rock, and with Handscombe holding his end up, a gradual improvement in Kilbirnie's position was seen. Muir, Champness, and Gillies, who had been bowling extremely well, began to lose their length and Moody, opening out a trifle, began to smack up the runs with a series of most attractive shots. Handscombe, after the pair had added 48 runs, could not resist having a slam at McLeod and was bowled. Broit was caught and bowled by the same bowler, off the first ball he. received, and L. Wilson managed to add a few. It was definitely Moody's innings and he ended up with 56 not out to his credit. Muir .and Ghampness took three wickets apiece, the former in particular bowling a dangerous inswinger at times. Details:— . • HUTT. ' First Innings. Ross, c Moody, bL. Wilson ...
