MATCHES DESCRIBED

AN OUTRIGHT WIN

-The pitch was soft wnen Old Boys and Wellington resumed their match at KUbirnie Park; Young (BS)iand_ Boyes (49) continued the Old- Boys", first Innings Hand. from 219 for, six wickets the -two colts carried the score- to 306 for seven: 'They had become associated on the first day at 107 for six wickets; thus their.sterling partnership had'added 199 runs to the score. That, they had been a busy pair can be gleaned from the fact that they were together ior 125, minutes. Both showed sound form, and picked the right ball to hit. It was noticeable that' they were careful about keeping the ball down; in fact, it could be said that not more than half a dozen balls were lofted during the whole partner-, ship. Young showed a very good conception of tile batting art, and very few balls, got past-him whilst he was batting for his 129. He drove well, both straight and through the covers, and some 4's square in front of point were excellent. Altogether fifteen 4's appeared in his score, and only two chances could be debited to his account. Boyes looked a certainty .for his century, but at 88 he was brilliantly caught at silly short leg by Morgan. Boyes hit only five 4's, but he scored freely enough all the same. His work on the off side was sound, and it was good to see his straight bat on ■ defence. Griffiths had a busy time for 26. The Old Boys total was 335. Blundell (four for 96) and Morrissey (four for 61) bowled steadily in spite of the greasy ball. A heavy shower fell at 3 p.m.. but ceased before the tea interval.

Morgan and Henley, who opened for Wellington, were fortunate in getting a good start while the ball was greasy, and Morgan showed some of his former facility on the off side. When 71 had been put on without difficulty Morgan was caught off Whyte. and then Griffiths and Whyte caused utter destruction with their slows. From 71 for cne, the whole side was out for another 46 runs. Griffiths took four.for 23 and Whyte five for 32.

If the Wellington first innings was a failure, the ,second innings was a debacle. The whole ten wickets fell for 50, of which Morgan made 25, Again the slow bowlers were irresistible, Griffiths taking seven for 33 and Whyta two for 12. The fielding of Old Boys was splendid right through. Details:— OLD BOYS. ~.'■ . First Innings.
