YOUNG A CENTURY; SLOW BOWLERS DO WELL
' The Wellington Cricket Association's senior grade competition took a somewhat sensational turn on Saturday afternoon, and play in all matches was eventful. Although having done, well on the first day (so far as play went) against Hutt. the championship leaders (Kilbirnie), who were without several of their main players, crashed heavily on Saturday, and were beaten on the first xnnm&s: The batsmen generally were at sea on a heavy track. Institute held [he pressure applied by University well enough to take first innings points, and this success placed Institute two points ahead of Kilbirnie on the championship ladder, a position which will give the com-, petition much added interest. For Wellington College Old Boys, Young and Boyes distinguished themselves with the bat, Young making a century and Boyes, falling.not far short. The pair put on 199 runs for the seventh wicket. The Old Boys' slow bowlers, Griffiths and Whyte, subsequently reaped a harvest, Wellington being badly beaten in 'making only 117 and 50. On-the day Griffiths took 11 wickets for 56 runs and Whyte seven, for 44. :V Midland made a strong effort to gain an outright win over ■Karori, but, after extra time was played, they had to be_ content with, a win on the first innings. ■ Incidents regarding decisions and extra.'itime were a feature of this match, which ended with Karon leaving the field some twenty minutes after the usual time for the .■'drawing-of stumps. Freeman, the former Nelson College player and New Zealand representative, who is on a visit from Fiji, took six wickels in Karon's second innings with his slow deliveries.
