CROQUET
WELLINGTON TOURNEY
TODAY'S MATCHES
The Wellington championships. wen advanced a stage further yesterday when, a number of matches in th( ladies' event were got off. The handicap doubles, which usually take up i considerable, time at the commencement; of the tournament, .have' now reached the. third round, and play, has quickened up considerably since the opening day. Yesterday Mrs. Hender son, a scratch player of very/ higlstandard, had two wins, having defeated Mrs. Chetwin, of' Kelburn, anc also Mrs. Bryan, of Lower Hutt. Ir the match' against Mrs. Chetwin,. both played good croquet, several substantial breaks being made, and Mrs. Henderson eventually won by 10 points, One of the surprises of the day was the defeat of Mrs'. Bryan (scratch) by Mrs. Hogan (1) in the ladies' championship. '' At the commencement oi the game Mrs.' Bryan, Jafter making two points, made a break to four back, and secured a good; lead until towards the end of the game, when Mrs. Hogari gradually worked both of her clips round. Mrs. Bryan being tmable "to hit in, Mrs. Hogan finished a hard-fought match, winning by three points. In the ladies' championship event Mrs. Hogan met Mrs. Kirk. Both these low bisquers played steadily in this game, Mrs. Hogan Judging the lawn better than her opponent, who, on several occasions, failed to ' get position for the hoops; This failure on the part of Mrs.. Kirk was probably instrumental in ,her losing the match, as the shooting by both players was exceptionally good. The game ended in favour of Mrs. Hogan, 26-21. One of the best games yet played in the' second section of the handicaps was that between Mrs. Gilbert (Ka'rori) and Mrs. Burbidge (Mount Victoria). Both players made good use of every opportunity, the long shooting by both was excellent, and the clips were practically; even, throughout, until towards the finish of the game, when Mrs. .Gilbert established a lead and ...eventually wbn: by three-points. • :- ;' - In the .handicap singles-.match between Mrs.,Manton (Wellington) and Mrs; Bradley -(Mount. Victoria), the former, had to concede 1J bisques to her opponent. Throughout the'.game the shooting by both players was good, the continued long shots by Mrs. Bradley being outstanding, and although no- breaks were registered, the careful execution •by the Mount Victoria player eventually secured her the game; . • ■ ■ '. 1 Mrs.. Venn met Mrs-. Congreve in the handicap : singles, second section. The play by Mrs. Venn was very steady, and although the shooting by Mrs. Consireve was good, her judgment of vthe lawns was not ud to the standard of her opponent. The score ended 26-17 in favour of Mrs. Venn. ' In .the next round. Mrs. Venn meets Mrs. ,llsley. . ..'.'■. The open championships are being played today, but owing to the fact this event is.."two out of three," the results are not yet available.
