A SACK-RACING EXPERT
Warm summer nights such as have been experienced lately make the out-of-doors popular, but normally for those in search of entertainment :there is little offering out in the open. For Saturday night, however1, the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre has been at work with a view to remedying the position and' has arranged to hold a big sports meeting at the Basin Reserve under electric light A meeting on a smaller scale was held there a few weeks:ago' and.not. .only was. it a successful gathering, providing some excellent contests,, but people who attended declared it to- be ia very pleasant wayof spending the, evening. For Saturday .night's meeting a comprehensive programme of handicap events has been drawn up and in these Wellington's leading athletes • will be taking part, including' C. Robinson (sprint champion), J. Ford (ex-Taranaki sprinter), J. Eastwood (who has been well to the fore this season), J. Sutherland (junior sprint champion), A. R. Wilson (mile champion), and A. J. Mackay (three-miles champion). Apart from these, Wellington has much other promising material this season. Splendid entries have been received and this should ensure the keenest competition. The programme has been augmented by the inclusion of special'features, which include an'• exhibition run by the American, coach, A. L. Fitch, >an acrobatic display by Alf Jenkins and his pupils, and an attempt by A. Hill to break the world sackrrace record for 75 yards and 100 yards. Hill, whose versatility, is well known, is a marvel when it comes to sack racing, and ,his performance is expected to be one of the high lights of the evening.
