Guests present were Mr. and Mrs. de Rouffignac, Mr. and Mrs. Haynes, Mr, and Mrs. Cameron, Mrs. Sherbrooke, Mr. and Mrs/.Pres- | tidge, Mr. and Mrs. Cox, Mr. and Mrs. | MacFarlane. 'Music was supplied by '' Mr. Haynes ' and Mr. Cameron. The competition, of the evening was won by Mr. A. Henderson, and the guests later enjoyed a delicious supper. Evans, and a piano £ solo by Miss M. Bowen. The Welsh 1 " Ladies' Choir made its debut, presentl ing four songs under the conductorship of Mrs. G. R. Thomson, who also led community singing. Roberts, c Penwomen's Circle. .]•' . c The Penwomen's Circle of the i-' Lyceum Club held a. pleasant meeting c yesterday afternoon in the main clubn room, which was attractively decorated i- with numerous. bowls .* of flowers. I- There was a very entertaining programme, Mrs. Victor Lloyd speaking c n the work of producing a radio play, and Mrs. D. Hubert singing and playing her own compositions. There was, quite a large attendance, including Mrs. W. Bailey (leader of the circle)'and Mrs. S..Masters (secretary). Kilbirnie Card Evening. - ■ There was a large attendance at the weekly card evening held in the clubroom of the, Kilbirnie branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association last evening, and an enjoyable, evening was spent by the players. Prizes for "500" were won by Mrs. Hanson and Mr. E. Stewart, and the best scores for bridge were returned by Mrs. Knox and Mr. Kennedy. It was announced . that arrangements for the annual dance to beheld at the end r of the month were well in hand. The ladies were reminded of the usual-card afternoon to be held on Thursday next. Married by Mayor of New York. The marriage of Mr. _Gatty, the representative in New Zealand of PanAmerican Airways, and Mrs. H.Gatty, who arif ved by the Mariposa to make their home at Auckland, was performed at the Summer City Hall, Long Island, New York, by the Mayor of New York, Mr. F. La Guardia, states . an exchange. Mr. Gatty said it was considered an honour to be married by the Mayor of New York, who rarely performed wedding ceremonies. Mr. La Guardia, however, was a war-time flyer and a member of various aviation organisations, and had known Mrs. Gatty for some years before her marriage. Mrs. Gatty was Miss Fenna Bolderhey, of Amsterdam, Holland. She was visiting New York with her parents when she met Mr. Gatty. Married Frenchwomen. The French Minister of the Interior, after consultation with the Minister of Justice and in agreement with the Government,- has instructed the. passport authorities that henceforth married women' may obtain a passport without the' marital authorisation, which by law had to accompany their ; application.; hitherto. "La Francaise" reports that this measure is due to the efforts'of Madame Cecile Bunschvicg, Under-Secretary of State at the j Ministry of Education. ; New Zealanders' Association. An enjoyable evening .was spent by I members of the New Zealanders' Association and their friends in the. Jewish Ladies' Club, Cuba Street, last evening, when Eden Philpott's threeact play, "Yellow Sands," produced by Miss Vi. Wilson, was presented by the - "Good Companions" Play-reading Club, the various parts being read by the following:—Richard Varwell, Mr. Charlton; Emma Major, Miss Pimm; Arthur Varwell, Mr. Saunders; Joe Varwell, Mr. Gardiner; Mr. Baslow, Mr. McCallum; Thomas Major, Mr. Lacey; Lydia Blake, Mrs. Shepheard; Mary Varwell, Miss Thomson; Jenifer Varwell, Mrs. Townshend; Minnie Masters, Miss Ince; ■ Nellie Masters, Miss McKenzie. The evening was greatly appreciated by all present and the players, who each handled their parts most capably, are to be congratulated on their splendid performance. Supper was" served by the ladies' committee. ~-
