TEMPERANCE WOMEN

BROOKLYN MEETING

A meeting of the Brooklyn W.C.T.U. was held recently in the Baptist's parlour, Mrs. Reed presiding over a good attendance. Mrs. Rain took the devotions. Among the -visitors welcomed were Mesdames Hutchings (Woo.dville), Davis, Weldon, and Robinson, and Long (central branch).

Correspondence was received from the Rev. Mr. Haslam inviting members to attend a special service on September 12 in the Methodist Church; Mesdames Jordan and Gittings were appointed to attend a meeting of the National Council of Women to hear an address by Dr. Sylvia Chapman. A report of the Women's Auxiliary was given by Mrs. Pearson, who stated that the hospital almoner would be grateful for gifts of nourishing food.

Several members visited the public hospital during the month, taking home-made cakes, sweets, flowers, and magazines. Mesdames Pickering and I^aac were appointed as delegates to the annual district convention at Upper Hutt. .-..;.

The speaker for the" afternoon was Miss Appleby, Dominion "V," organiser, who spoke on temperance work in other countries, including America. Canada, Sweden. South Africa, and Great Britain, also stating that the Queen had ccnsented to become patron of the Church of England Temperance Society.

A dainty afternoon tea was served by the Baptist ladies. , .
