THIRD ATTACK FAILS
OFFENSIVE REVERSED
LOYALISTS AT SARAGOSSA
(Received September 4, 10 a.m.)
LONDON, September 3,
It is reported from Saragossa that a third failure, after weeks of fighting, attended a Government offensive aimed at the capture of Saragossa as compensation for the loss of Santander. The rebels rectified the lines broken by the first loyalist attack. They then snatched the offensive, smothered loyalist counter-attacks, and secured the village of Mediana with an old-style cavalry charge by five squadrons under clouds of smoke from a supporting artillery barrage.
It is announced in Madrid that the Republicans surged into Belchite and captured a seminary and a bull-ring in the suburbs. They are now battling with grenades and bayonets in the main streets.
The insurgents' position is pre-: carious.
