ILL-FATED ARCTIC VENTURE

The diary of the Swedish explorer Andree, who was lost while making an attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon in 1897, was1 found on the small island of Lochhinlop, in tb.e Straits of Spitzbergen, enclosed in » globe of copper and cork. The explorer's handwriting is in good condition. It is believed that the diary was thrown out as the balloon was passing over the region. It describes only part of the flight, and the explorer's ultimate fate is still a mystery.
