SEVEN APPOINTMENTS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

Appointments to the Legislative Council to bring it up : to the usual strength of 40 members will probably be made before the opening of Parliament on September 9, said the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, this morning. The present strength of the council, he said, was 33, and to bring it up to the membership of 40 it was necessary that seven appointments should be made. .

The first thing to be considered was to ensure that the Government had a majority in the Council. At present it ,did not have a majority, and sufficient 'appointments would be made to ensure a majority. " /

Mr. Savage said that the list had not yet been completed, but it was hoped to announce the appointments before the opening of Parliament,
