RANFURLY SHIELD.
INTEREST IN MATCH
(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.")
DUNEDIN, This Day.
The Otago team to meet Southland on Saturday at Carisbrook in the first game of the season for the Ranfurly Shield will be captained by H. Simon (half-back), who was captain of the side in a number of Shield encounters last year. Those who favour Southland's chances of taking the Shield from Otago on Saturday have been concerned during the week by reports that N. A. Mitchell, the Southland and New Zealand three-quarter, was unlikely to play because of a leg injury received during a series of trial matches held recently in Wellington. The injury, it was reported, was not responding to treatment,.and there was a likelihood of Mitchell being on the bank for some weeks. Advice received from Invercargill, however, is to the effect that Mitchell will definitely be leading the Southland team on Saturday. He is still receiving treatment, but trial runs have been satisfactory. The match is creating extraordinary interest. Southerners will visit Dunedin in their thousands. .
