A SURPRISING DECLINE
The decline in the nominations received in the Dominion for the spring meetings in Australia, this year is rather surprising, as it was generally expected that: New Zealand would have its customary representation in Sydney and Melbourne again. It is ditficiilt to account for the falling off in the lists, and- it is not yet possible to say whether it is only a chance decline or discloses a trend. At least the Dominion may well be satisfied that the recovery of racing has so far progresed that the stakes now offering in New Zealand are sufficient to keep most of the good horses at home. Owners and stables who have been regular patrons of Australian meetings in recent times are missing from this year's entry lists. Perhaps the lure of the "easy money" that is to be got from the bookmakers is not quite so great an inducement as it was in other days.
