"CANTERBURY JEANS"

PRESENT FOR MISS BATTEN

. Some ; time ago .. a correspondent writing to. the editor of "The Press" suggested'that a fund should beopened of contributions of one shilling each from "Canterbury Jeans" for a presentation to commemorate the achievement of Miss Jean Batten; In flying from England to New Zealand. Sixtyone "Jeans" contributed one shilling each, states "The. Press." .

The editor then wrote to Miss Batten asking her to say what' present would be most'acceptable to her. ,

In reply, Miss Batten says:— : ."I was indeed pleased to learn that a fund had been raised in my honour by the 'Canterbury Jeans.' It was a very-kind thought on the part of my namesakes and a very, patriotic gesture to contribute £3 Is towards the expenses- of one of their countryworrien.,.who is endeavouring to .help spread the gospel of aviation. : "You ask me in your letter what article would be most acceptable to me. I should be very pleased to receive a slide rule, which, in addition to helping me solve various navigational problems rapidly while flying, would travel in the cockpit with me on my flights and would serve as a constant reminder of the kind .gesture of the 'Canterbury Jeans.' Incidentally, my own slide rule was mislaid shortly after my flight from England to New Zealand. . ■

"Please give my best wishes to the 'Canterbury Jeans'." , The money, £3 Is, is being sent to Miss Batten to • enable' her to select si rule suitable to her requirements.
