MATINEE CONTESTS

Great interest was taken in a mile race for two-year-olds at a recent New Brighton matinee meeting. Among those that competed were Southland, Horsepower, Sentiment, Jackaranda,. Bayard, Three Bells, Lord Zetland, .a full-brother to Fine Art, and Florentine The juveniles behaved well and acted very satisfactorily. In a sharp contest Horsepower won well in 2mm 24 4-ssec, the first four furlongs occupying Imin 14 l-ssec. The American colt, Bill 8., was one of the leaders from the start of the event for novices, and he finished well to win by a length in 3min 26sec. The first mile occupied 2min 20sec. There were ten starters.

Olive King led all the way to win a similar contest in good style from >11 opponents. She recorded 3min 28sec, the first mile taking 2min 21 2-ssec.
