DICKENS FELLOWSHIP

A meeting of the Dickens Fellowship held in Charming Hall recently was presided over by Mr. Charlton.

Mr. Roy Hill opened the programme with two delightful songs. Mr. J. McGill followed with pianoforte solos, and Miss Gladys Webb gave much pleasure with her singing. Each item was enthusiastically encored. Accompaniments were ably played by Mrs. Price.

The Dickens side of the programme was contributed to by Mr. A. Dickens, who held the close attention ;of the audience with an interesting reading entitled "A Portrait of Dickens." Miss Bennett provided great amusement by reading a 'selection from "Pickwick Papers," and Miss Barrow added to the humour of the evening by an extract from the same book.

Reference was made to Mr. Charlton's talk from 2YA recently, and members were pleased to hear that no less than thirty-six letters of appreciation were received by him from as far as Russell and Invercargill, one being from an elderly lady who knew Charles Dickens personally. An interesting fact mentioned in one letter, was the writer's happening to "tune in" to a "Dickens . Birthday Broadcast" from Moscow. ' ~ .

The chairman thanked all who had contributed to a very enjoyable programme.

The secretary would like to call the attention of all Dickens lovers to these meetings which are held monthly, and are always advertised in the columns of this paper on the Saturday previous. New members are invited, and will be cordially welcomed.
