LAUNDRY WORKERS
WAGES AND CONDITIONS
The wages and conditions of laundry dyers, and dry-cleaners in the Wellington industrial district are fixed by an award of the Arbitration Court coming into effect on March 15 as follows:—
With the exception of depot hands, who are given a 44-hour week, the 40-hour week was given.
Minimum wage rates for male workers were fixed at 15s for workers beginning under 16 years of age to 72s 6d for the second half of the fifth year, and thereafter £4 10s for laundry workers, £4 15s for dry-cleaners and carpet cleaners, and £6 for journeymen dyers. Female 'workers under 16 years of age are to be paid 15s, with increases up to £2 in the fourth year, and thereafter £2 5s a .week, with 5s a week extra for hand-ironers and depot hands. Foremen and forewomen are to receive 10s in excess of the rate to the highest paid worker. Where hospital workers have to handle materials which are recognised as septic, they are to be paid 25 per cent, above the ordinary rate while engaged in such work.
Where a worker is in receipt of a higher rate of wages than that provided, in the award, such wages shall not be reduced.
Overtime is to be paid for at the rate of time and a half for the first four hours, and double time thereafter. ■In addition, to the statutory holidays, workers are to be allowed an annual holiday of one week on full pay after twelve months' service.
