AMATEUR ATHLETICS

TOMORROW'S MEETING

The Wellington provincial amateur athletic championships, to be held at the Basin Reserve tomorrow, are arousing keen interest, and it is anticipated that, given a fine day, there will be some outstanding performances made. With the Wellington team to represent the province at the national championships to be chosen on tomorrow's form, every competitor with any prospect of getting a trip to Auckland will be out to do his very best, and competition as a result is certain to be very keen, with the possibility of several surprises to add spice to the gathering. There are some first-class performers in Wellington this season, among them being A. R. Wilson and J. M. Watt, two .runners with definite chances of winning New Zealand titles.' The conditions, have been all against Wilson returning fast times in, the mile, but the ability, is there and if the weather iswkind -'".he. can;'be expected "to put up a great run. He is easily the best miler seen out in . Wellington -since the days of G. Bayne. Watt is capable of breaking 50. seconds for the quarter-mile, and he might, easily do this at the Basin Reserve.1 He is a- better runner today than he was in 1934, when'he ran second to T. G. Broadway in the national 440 yards championship. This by no means exhausts .the, array of talent which will be seen' in action. .■.'.. 'The meeting is to.start at 11 a.m., and following.a short break, the principal events-will commence at 2 p.m.
