(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

INVERCARGILL, February 25.

While crossing a backwater of the flooded Makarewa River on horseback this afternoon, John Cuff, aged 35, employed on a farm at Tussock Creek, was in some manner unseated and is believed to have been drowned. A search made for the body was unsuccessful, owing to the river being in high flctod. He was seen being apparently washed off his horse by a boy who went for assistance. When others arrived the man could not be seen and the horse was on the opposite side of the river.
