SWIMMING CARNIVAL

NEW KARORI BATHS

The new Karori Baths will be the scene of the* first swimming carnival of the year tomorrow afternoon, when a full and interesting programme of events will be decided. Two championship events, the 100 and 220 yards freestyle, will be decided, and both races have large and evenly-balanced entries.

The race over the shorter distance between Pennington, Somervell, Plank, | Thwaites, and other front-rank swimmers shoulg be a very close contest. The furlong distance, which is very popular in Wellington, should be even more closely fought out than it was last year, and there is a possibility of a surprise win. Entries for the 66 2-3 yards A and B grade handicaps and the 33 1-3 yards open handicap are very heavy. In the last race 87 swimmers have been handicapped, and judging by [the ready response there will be few withdrawals. There is also a good field in the 100 yards freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke medley, which race is a novelty at local carnivals. All clubs are represented in' a 200 yards six-man handicap relay race. Another event of great interest is the shield contcst, an annual relay event between teams of ten-a-side from the LyaJl Bay and Maranui Clubs. There are also an open dive, a breaststroke event, a ladies' sprint handicap, boys' and girls' races, and an A grade water polo match between Maranui and University, the clubs which are sponsoring the carnival.
