ABBOTT STILL LEADS NINTH ROUND COMPLETED __ > (By Telegraph —Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 2. At the conclusion of the ninth round in the New Zealand chess championship tourney today H. R. Abbott, Christchurch, is still leading, his aggregate being 7 points. I. Burry, Auckland, and S. Hindin, Christchurch, have 5J each, and E. H. Severne, Wellington, 5. Severne has one adjourned game to complete in the ninth round. Play was as follows, the firstnamed playing white in each case:— C. B. Newick, Auckland, v. H. McNa6b, Auckland (Sicilian). —In the end game Newick with a pawn up was unable to force a win and the game was drawn at move 33. F. K. Kelling, Wellington, v. I. Hunter, Christchurch (French Defence). —Hunter lost a pawn early in the game and another in the middle game and got a rook out of play. He resigned at move 39. I. Burry, Auckland, v. H. R. Abbott, Christchurch (Sicilian). —An even game resulted in a draw at move 33. S. Hindin, Christchurch, v. E. H. Severne, Wellington (Centre). —Hindin won a pawn at the nineteenth move, but the game was drawn at move 30. K. Beyer, Wellington, v. D. Lynch, Hastings (Reti). —In the middle game Beyer had the attack, but Lynch suddenly turned the tables with a strong knight move which won him the exchange and later a pawn. Beyer resigned at move 34. R. O. Scott, Wanganui, v. D. I. Jones, Auckland (Queen's Pawn, Colle). —This game was adjourned on the forty-seventh move, Scott having a bishop and five pawns against a rook and four pawns. G. P. Anderson, Wellington, v. J. A. Erskine, Invercargill (Alekhine Defence).—A gruelling game drawn at move 39. Results of adjourned games are as follows:— Sixth round.—-Anderson drew with Scott, Erskine drew with Hindin, Burry beat Lynch, Kelling beat Jones, Severne drew with Newick, Abbott beat Hunter. In the premier reserve tourney Aislabie, Napier, is leading with 8£ points.
