HOMEWARD BOUND

END OF HOLIDAYS

TRAFFIC ON THE ROADS

If they have not already started, Wei: ington motorists who tried to leave as many miles between them and the city as possible by going far afield for their holidays will soon be on the move making for home again, and they will be joined by the numerous other parties who took shorter trips. So far not many motor campers have been noticed, coming into town on return frori their holidays, but they should begin to show up by tonight. Tomorrow, however, will be the big day. The homeward trek will then be on in earnest. Wellington and its environs were comparatively- free from accidents on New Year's Eve and yesterday, which gives a good opening to the New Year. It is contended that if motorists will be reasonable and not impatient and obsarve the cardinal rules of keeping to ;he left and not driving at an excessive speed, there is no reason why this good start should be spoiled. /.part from motor traffic, there will be many passengers during the next few days by rail and steamer, and the indications point to the air services also being well patronised. The air services permit of the last fond farewell being delayed almost until the las'; moment, and although this may not be the exact reason, there are certainly quite a number who are waiting until Sunday before they cross to ! the- South Island and are then departing by Cook Strait Airways machines. Instead of the usual two departures from Wellington on a Sunday, there will be five trips from Wellington tomorrow and five to Wellington. The aeroplanes are heavily booked for all these trips. I?here will not be an exceptionally heavy number of passengers travelling frcm Wellington to Lyttelton by the Wahine tonight, but from Monday night the ships in this service are heavily boaked from Wellington, and no doubt thi>re will also be many people travelling north to Wellington by them. The Nelson ferry steamers tonight, especially the boat from Nelson, are reported to be heavily booked, and j throughout next week the number of ipassengers carried each night will be !w'»ll above normal.
