MEAMEA'S FAST FINISH
After being in-apparent trouble on the home turn in the Manuao-Maiden Plate) Meamea switched off the fence to. the outer as they were entering the straight, and Jie swept up readily over the last furlong to score'attractively by a length and a half from the hot favourite Southern Blood. It was the second victory in succession for Otaki stables, as this winner is trained by M. Williams for Mr. N. Clout, of Wellington. , .*■■'.'■■■■■. ;
Meainea has riot done a great deal of racing yet, but he gave indication of his improving form in finishing on fourth recently at Woodville. He is a three-year-old - chestnut gelding by Lackham from the Arausio—Te Aupaki mare Hine Wehi, a sister to Pakitere and a half-sister to" Toxeuma, and he was bred by Mr. Clout. Hine Wehi was a promising filly on the track whose career was cut short by an accident.
Southern Blood, who was at a short price, was possibly a little unlucky, despite the apparent merit in the winner's effort. He was taken round to the leaders, Lufra and Golden Sheen, three horses-out on the turning track, and then when racing to the front on entering the straight,he ran in and had to be steadied. It was then that Meamea swept past him, and he could-not be got going again.-
Trimden, well: ridden just in behind the leaders all the'way, hung ori for third two lengths away and it was a promising effort*' first out after her spell. Gay Boy's sister Gay Ruby, handy throughout, was fourth, with Alunga finishing on next, then-Party, Lufra, and' Golden- Sheen. Lufra showed plenty of early pace, and will benefit with the race. So will Alunga, who was probably the best-looking horse in the field and was making his public bow.
