LOOKING VERY WELL
BEAU CALLANTE'S HURDLES
Beau Gallante, paraded looking better than he has for a long time, made easy work of winning the Puketoi Hack Hurdles. He dwelt at the start, but he was soon retrieving lost ground, and after taking charge from Miss Hushabye going to the hurdle near the five furlongs he was never required to show his best. After jumping the last fence effortlessly he came right away on the bit to beat Mid Acre by three lengths. .. The field Beau Gallante accounted for was of moderate quality, with Otauru King's not racing up to recent form, but his performance was nevertheless most attractive. It was his second success, since taken over on lease by his trainer, R. C. Penman, of Otaki, but on his present greatly-improved appearance he is soon gbing to score more, \ possibly on the .flat as well as over hurdles. * . Mid Acre went in better style than at Feilding, but he had to be hard ridden to reach" within range of Beau
Gallante, and he was finally quite out-
classed in the run home from the last - fence. The Otaki course has previously suited him, for he won his first race there. ■ :■ . ..■■•■'■■ Count "Willonyx was a poor thirsd, but his showing was better all through than at Woodville. Miss Hushabye was going well in front till she very nearly . came down after landing over the third fence and that knocked the steam out of her. Contract, whose jumping was never very good, was running on at fhe death. Otauru King quit altogether with half the race over, and it looked as though he might have been feeling the hard track.;,...; -. r.
