INITIAL DOUBLE SUCCESS
Mazzini, unable to pass out of maiden ranks in novice class, -accepted the opportunity to do so in the Pukekaraka Hack Handicap, but he had to be ridden hard to achieve the result. Not only was it his first win, but he provided his owner, Mr. A. Giorgi, of Hastings, with-his initial Turf success.
It was the irony of fate that Mazzini should have drawn the rail position in this field of five, when it was not of great advantage, for he had been continually drawing wide marbles in big maiden fields. He was the first actually to show out, but Vonia Park and Golden Chest quickly passed him. Entering the straight Vonia Park hung out a little, taking Golden Chest with him, and this left a gap for Mazzini, who went into the opening but had to be whipped home hard to dispose of Golden Chest by a long head. Mazzini is a three-year-old gelding by Chief Ruler from the Dignity mare Dignified, who never raced and was imported specially for the Westmere Stud. He is his dam's first foal and was bought at the yearling sales for 17(5 guineas by Mr. Millar on behalf of Mr. tltorgL. who is a business partner. His win was overdue, for he has been racing well all the season.
Golden Chest was having her first race this season and she gave the winner's backers some worrying moments. She might have been even more worrying if she had not been on the outside of Vonia Park, who is always inclined to hang out. Vonia Park was a fair third. Mittie, who has recently been suffering from an abscessed jaw, looked too pretty, and the race should help her a lot. Going Gay showed early pace but was always out on the course.
