SMASH AT BRIDGE

HEAVY TRUCK IN FLAMES

(Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day.

Failing to negotiate a bridge at the foot of a small slope half a mile south of Sanson, on the main road, a 51-ton truck on Saturday afternoon struck the parapet, with the result that the benzine tank exploded and the vehicle was burnt. The lorry, owned by the Highways Transport Co., was driven by a Mr. Robbie, and passed through Sanson about 4.30 p.m. It is thought that something was at fault in the mechanism as the vehicle approached the bridge, for the driver was'particularly well experienced. The parapet of the bridge was smashed. The flames from the benzine rapidly reduced the vehicle and its load of electrical equipment to ruin, although the fire was still smouldering on Sunday afternoon. The driver was removed to hospital after receiving medical attention.
