OBITUARY

MRS. J. H. CARSON' The death. occurred of Mrs. J. -XL Carson, a well-known and much respected resident of Palmerston North, at her residence on September 13. She had been a resident in Palmerston for 34 years. Mrs. Carson was born at OJrig, Scotland, and was the'daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Mackay. On the death of her parents she went to' live in England with her brother, the late Mr. George Mackay, at Kendal (where he was Mayor for many years). His son, Sir George Mills Mackay, was appointed High Sheriff of London in 1921.

In 1879 Miss Mackay came out to New Zealand to join another brother, the late Mr. ' Angus Mackay, and arrived by the ship Rakaia after a voyage of four months. She was married to Mr. Carson in Auckland, and soon after they came to Wellington and lived here f several years. In 1902 they removed to Palmerston North, and stayed there ever since. Mrs. Carson, is survived by her husband arid two sons (Messrs. A. .J. Carson, Opihi, and A. W. Carson, Palmerston North), and one daughter (Mrs. A. Bell, Palmerston North), also one brother (the Rev. Murdoch Mackay, Scotland). \ There are nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Carson lost one son at the war, and another who was in camp at Featherston. The youngest son died at the age of twelve in 1907. 'Mrs. Carson was a member of St. Andrew's Church. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. J. Hubbard. ARTILLERY BALL The Artillery Ball committee wishes to remind all invitation holders, members, and ex-members of the Artillery of the annual ball to' be held in St. Francis Hall', on Thursday next. The committee has now finalised its arrangement's, and; all who! attend may look forward with pleasure to a very enjoyable time. .
