BRITISH EXPANSION IN

AUGUST

Allowing for seasonal influences overseas trade continued to expand in August. Imports amounted to £66,057,087, as compared with £68,731,020 in July and £59,146,232 in August last year. Exports totalled £35,258,115, against £40,085,922 in July and £34,883,955 in August, 1935. Reexports were £4,355,909, compared with £4,991,716 in July and £4,185,561 in August a year ago. Although the figures for imports, exports, and re-exports are all lower than in July, they represent an increase on August of last year and also on August, 1934* For Hhe first eight months of this year imports totalled £536,624,391, an increase of £57,579,713 on the Corresponding period of 1935. Exports for the eight months totalled £283,170,234, an increase of £5,433,283 compared with 1935 and of £28,080,910 compared with the corresponding period of 1934. Exports of manufactured goods have risen by £4,707,641. Principal increases in August were: Imports, grain and flour, £1,161,000; dairy produce, £347,000; beverages, £462,000; wood and timber, £440,000; iron ore, £313,000; cotton and raw waste, £1,677,000; iron and steel, £416,000; oils and fats, £417,000. Exports, vehicles, £413,000. Decreases: Imports, fresh fruit and vegetables, £832,000; rubber, £630,000. Exports, coal, £414,000; iron and steel, £391,000. ■
