"UNHOLY ROW"

(To the Editor.;

Sir, —In fairness to' those responsible for the conduct of the dance men-1 tioned under the above heading, will I you please publish this reply and defence? The letter of complaint par- / ticularly mentioned should have been j, published in full, and would have in- t, dicated the attitude of the writer, j Without exception the vicinity of the a hall has been free of patrons and cars at ten minutes past midnigh^ .. Also, j, the hall is one minute from the police 0 station, and a complaint 'would be y very quickly attended to, but there has v been no complaint made. The dance c was attended by the chief inspector j, j mentioned on Saturday night, July 11,- who told ex-Councillor Grierson j that there was no cause for complaint. s The only noise we had was the loud _ applause evoked by the marvellous _ dancing. None of the councillors who c declaimed so loudly have ever, attend- c ed to see for themselves, but rely on ( other people's statements.. The re- , serves committee has definite evidence that damage in Riddiford Park was , done by people who were not patrons j of the dance, and, lastly, the police ( who patrol the vicinity of the hall have j given it an excellent report. x Therefore I claim that our patrons and . dance are as decent and respectable as ' any in New Zealand, and not the [ drunken crowd one a would imagine from the published report.—l am, etc., C. EVANS. (To the Editor.) Sir,—With reference to the criticism ' of dances in the Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt, I wish to state on behalf . ' of the Lower Hutt Returned Soldiers' ■ Association that the conduct of the , ; fortnightly dances held by our branch in our clubrooms, Lower Hutt, does ' not come under the caption,' "Unholy ' Row." They are run on very strict " lines, are positively by invitation only, 1 and are conducted as such. Many have ' been the . congratulatory reports re- ; ceived by the committee from vario us persons who have attended. The rules of the Returned Soldiers' As--5 soeiation strictly forbid the bringing, " or consuming of intoxicating liquor in 1 or near our clubrooms, and we are T sure the Mayor of Lower Hutt, who • himself is a member of our .association, and a valued one at that, was ■ not in any way placing us in the above - category. My committee would wel--1 come a visit from any inspector or - other person authorised to act at such . public functions so that the statements 1 herein contained could be definitely s substantiated.—l am, etc., 1 P. E. McNICOL, f Hon. Secretary House and Social * Committee, W.R.S.A., Lower Hutt Branch. _l ______________________ .
